Training

We believe young puppies should have the opportunity to develop emotionally, socially and physically from the moment they are born. We do Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) from day 3 -16 and continue daily socialization and enrichment exercises until they go to their forever homes. ENS is believed to enhance a puppy’s development. In fact, tests prove that stimulated pups were found to be more active and more confident than their non-stimulated littermates. The ENS exercises were developed by the U.S. Military for their canine training programs to give the dogs a superior advantage in life.

Five benefits observed in canines that were exposed to the stimulation exercises:

  1. Improved cardio vascular performance (heart rate)

  2. Stronger heart beats

  3. Stronger adrenal glands

  4. Greater tolerance to stress

  5. Increased resistance to disease

We use Dr. Carmen Battaglia's Rule of 7 for socialization. By the time the puppies are 7 weeks old, they will have been exposed to several positive experiences which will help them flourish into confident companions.

The Rule of 7 includes activities like:

  1. They have been on 7 different types of surfaces: carpet, tile, linoleum, wood, vinyl, grass, dirt, gravel, and alfalfa pellets.

  2. Played with 7 different types of objects: rope toys, plush toys, big balls, small balls, squeaky toys, paper or cardboard items, metal items, and sticks.

  3. Been in 7 different locations: living room, kitchen, front & back yard, car, garage, laundry room, bathroom, kids room, hallway, Vet’s office.

  4. Met and played with 7 new people  including young children, men, women and older adults, someone walking with a cane or in a wheelchair or walker.

  5. Been exposed to 7 challenges: climb on a box, go through a tunnel, climb steps, go down steps, climb over obstacles, play hide and seek, go in and out of a doorway with a step up or down, run around a fence.

  6. Eaten from 7 different containers:  metal, plastic, cardboard, paper, human hands, pie plate and tin pan.

  7. Eaten in 7 different locations: pen, crate, family room, laundry room, living room, kitchen, and back yard.

Studies have shown a well socialized pup will be a better behaved adult dog. By exposing the puppies to a variety of experiences in their formative development, they are better able to handle new challenges in their adult lives. Socialization is crucial to ensure the puppies will be confident, relaxed and good with other pets, people and children. It also improves trainability and the pup's ability to cope with stress and manage change.

We also encourage housebreaking as soon as the puppies can walk. We take them outside regularly (weather permitting) and they have access to a designated 'potty' area in their pen.
